How does Suunto Spartan's the optical heart rate sensor works?

The optical heart rate sensor inside the watch causes an LED light to shine on the user's pulse and measures the amount of light that is dispersed through the bloodstream. This is based on the fact that the light entering the body disperses in a predictable way by changing the dynamics of blood flow, such as changes in pulse rate or blood volume (cardiac output).
